Fenerbahce's longing to finally compete with Europe's best clubs on a competitive level is immense. The team last qualified for the main draw of the UEFA Champions League in 2008. Since then, they have failed in the playoffs twice, but usually even earlier. Jose Mourinho's team once again made it to the final qualifying round, and yet, according to the most popular bookies it would be a surprise if Fenerbahce progress further in the tournament. Meanwhile, Benfica is aiming for their fifth consecutive Champions League appearance having reached the round of 16 last season and also losing to eventual champions Chelsea in the last 16 of the Club World Cup after extra time. In terms of quality, coach Bruno Lage's team is no weaker than their opponents, which is why despite the home advantage Benfica seems in stronger position. The team has had a strong start to the new season. After losing out to city rivals Sporting in both the league and the cup final last year, they are determined to win domestic titles again this season. They already achieved this in the Super Cup against their all time rivals. They also won both of their Champions League qualifiers against Nice, and their opening league match ended with a 1-0 victory at Estrela Amadora this weekend. |
